Art is at the heart of our spaces, especially in a city as inspiring as Prague. When designing our new hotel, we wanted every room to reflect the city’s rich history and unique character. Partnering with local artist Jana Babincová was the perfect way to bring this vision to life.
Jana, inspired by the Czech Cubist movement, created a collection of unique geometric paintings for us. Each piece, crafted in her studio, is one of a kind and will be displayed above the beds in Sir Prague, adding a personal artistic touch to every room. During our visit, Jana shared how design, music, and her connection to Prague shape her creative process.
Where in the city do you find your inspiration?
My name is Jana Babincová, and I’m a painter and multimedia artist living and working in Prague. This beautiful city inspires me in countless ways. I’m particularly drawn to the Czech Cubist movement, which influences much of my work. You can see its impact all around Prague—from statues and furniture to paintings, villas, cafés, and even cemeteries. Tip: Visit the "House of the Black Madonna" designed by Josef Gočár, which now houses the Czech Cubism Museum and the cafe inside is great too.
Why is Prague a great city to be an artist?
Prague has been a hub of creativity for centuries, making it a rich source of inspiration for artists of all kinds. Aside from my passion for visual art, I have a deep love for music and enjoy transforming it into visual forms. Living in Prague offers countless opportunities to attend concerts and connect with musicians, allowing me to engage with music on a profound level.
What does creating art mean to you?
Creating art is essential to me—it’s how I express my thoughts, emotions, and even my concerns. It also allows me to explore my research and discoveries. I love uncovering new ideas, connections, and relationships, and being an artist gives me the ability to weave all these elements into my creations and artistic visions.
As an artist, what message would you like to share about the Czech people?
Czech people have a unique sense of humor—most of us enjoy dark humor and can joke about almost anything. You won’t get a typical politeresponse here; instead, you’ll find honesty that can be surprising but always genuine, keeping you in touch with real emotions.
When you were approached about creating artwork for Sir Prague, what excited you about the opportunity?
I’ve been studying this unique art style for years, traveling around the Czech Republic to explore its distinctive shapes and geometric symbols. This opportunity allowed me to deepen my knowledge, develop my artistic vision, and share my work with hotel guests and other art enthusiasts.
